Who Beowulf is
Beowulf belongs to the Geats and serves their king, Hygelac, who is also his uncle. His extraordinary strength makes him willing to face dangers that other warriors cannot overcome. When he hears of Grendel's attacks, he gathers companions and sails to the Danish coast.
What Beowulf wants
Beowulf wants his courage and deeds to earn him a lasting name. His journey also answers an older obligation, because Hrothgar once settled a deadly feud for Ecgtheow. Helping the Danish king brings together his desire for fame and his loyalty to family.
Beowulf and the others in the story
Hrothgar welcomes Beowulf with hope, remembering both the young warrior and his father. Unferth challenges the visitor's reputation, and Beowulf answers by describing his courage during a dangerous swim. Their relationship shifts when Unferth later lends him the sword Hrunting for another encounter.
