What happens when lovers, rivals, and schemers follow their wishes—and fate answers back?
The Happy Foes brings you into the world of Ming dynasty Chinese storytelling, where love, money, rivalry, and luck pull people in competing directions. Attributed to Xihuyuyinzhuren, whose pen name means the Recluse of West Lake, this story collection follows lovers, families, and schemers as one choice leads to another. What they want sets events moving; what follows may surprise them.
Desire, consequence, and the tangled knots of fate shape these tales. A young man longs for a woman, a family wants a fortune, or a rival wants to win. A small deceit, a hasty promise, or a generous act can return in an unexpected form. The pleasure lies in watching human wishes meet results that nobody can fully control.

Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
A clever wife saves a stranger's daughter
The first tale opens with Hua Lin, an only son who learns nothing at school. His parents marry him to a capable girl named Xu, called Hua Erniang, hoping a wife will settle him. Instead he swears brotherhood with a gambler named Li Erbai and a scholar named Ren Long.
His parents die, and his wife nurses them without complaint. The author does not make her a saint. He gives her something the men lack, which is quick thinking.
