Shrnutí knihy Fathers and Sons: Chapter 9

Chapter 9 z 28 · 4 min. na přečtení kapitoly

In Chapter 9, Bazarov meets Thenichka, examines her baby, and puts her at ease, but challenges Arkady’s belief that his father should marry her. His criticism of the estate and dismissal of nature lead into laughter at the father’s cello playing, which Arkady cannot share.

Co se stane

  1. Walking through the garden, Bazarov advises Arkady about planting trees and notices Thenichka with Duniasha and Mitia.
  2. Bazarov introduces himself, examines Mitia’s swollen gums, and holds him calmly; the baby cries when Arkady tries to take him.
  3. Arkady says his father should marry Thenichka, while Bazarov questions whether a wedding ceremony matters.
  4. Bazarov criticizes the estate’s condition and workers, then describes nature as a place for practical work rather than reverence.
  5. Hearing Arkady’s father play the cello, Bazarov laughs at his age and position, but Arkady remains unsmiling.

Na co se zaměřit

Bazarov treats nature as material for human work rather than an object of reverence. This sharpens his disagreement with Arkady’s thoughtful response to the landscape.

Rychlý test

Why does Bazarov laugh when he hears the cello?
