Shrnutí knihy Fathers and Sons: Chapter 10

Chapter 10 z 28 · 17 min. na přečtení kapitoly

In Chapter 10, Bazarov becomes familiar to much of the household, but his influence on Arkady troubles Nikolai Petrovitch and provokes Paul Petrovitch into an argument. Bazarov defends complete denial as useful, while the brothers defend principles and culture, leaving Nikolai to recognize a generational conflict he once helps create himself.

Co se stane

  1. Bazarov works, treats Mitia, and wins affection among the servants, though Paul Petrovitch and Prokofitch dislike him.
  2. Nikolai Petrovitch overhears Bazarov dismiss him as outdated, and Arkady replaces his Pushkin with Büchner.
  3. The brothers decline Koliazin’s invitation, and Paul Petrovitch prepares to challenge Bazarov.
  4. At tea, Paul Petrovitch defends aristocratic dignity and principles, while Bazarov argues that usefulness requires denying everything.
  5. Their dispute widens to Russian peasants, art, and social institutions before Bazarov leaves with Arkady to dissect frogs.
  6. Nikolai Petrovitch recalls rejecting his own mother’s understanding, while Paul Petrovitch insists the older generation remains more right.

Na co se zaměřit

Bazarov grounds his position in usefulness rather than inherited authority. This claim drives the dispute over whether destruction without rebuilding can serve society.

What does Arkady do with his father’s copy of Pushkin?
