Chapter 33 z 57 · Čtení chapter zabere 12 min.

In Chapter 33, Cain Ball interrupts the oat harvest with news that he sees Bathsheba walking affectionately with a soldier he identifies as Sergeant Troy in Bath. Gabriel presses him for certainty, but Cain fears taking an oath, leaving Gabriel troubled and unable to dismiss the report.

Co se stane

  1. Bathsheba remains in Bath for two weeks, sending Maryann a note about her continued absence.
  2. Cain Ball arrives during the oat harvest, and repeated coughing delays his account of Bath.
  3. Cain describes Bathsheba walking arm in arm with a soldier and sharing an emotional meeting in a park.
  4. Gabriel repeatedly redirects Cain from accounts of shops, hot water, and religious services.
  5. Pressed to swear that he recognizes Bathsheba and Troy, Cain retreats from certainty because he fears the oath.
  6. The workers resume harvesting, and Gabriel acknowledges Coggan’s reminder that Bathsheba cannot be his sweetheart.
