In Chapter 4, Bella secretly marries John Rokesmith at Greenwich with Pa’s help, then posts a letter telling her mother about the marriage and celebrates with both men. Her repeated requests for forgiveness and her affectionate attention to Pa show that becoming a wife does not weaken her bond with her father.
Vad händer
- Bella gives Pa a chain made from her hair, asks his forgiveness for past behavior, and helps him leave unnoticed.
- Bella meets Pa away from home, travels with him to Greenwich, and marries John Rokesmith while an old pensioner watches.
- Bella posts her letter to Ma, and the three enjoy breakfast at the couple’s cottage and an outing across the heath.
- At their hotel dinner, Bella assures Pa that marriage adds John to their affectionate circle rather than excluding him.

- Pa offers an emotional toast, and Bella again seeks his forgiveness before he leaves by steamboat.
