Literary devices

Dramatic irony

Method: Shakespeare lets the audience know Iago plans the deception while Othello trusts him and mistakes innocent actions for signs of betrayal. Effect: The audience watches Othello misread events it understands, making his growing certainty painful rather than reassuring and exposing the danger of misplaced trust.

Where: Scene 1.3, Scene 3.3, Scene 4.1

Soliloquy

Method: Shakespeare gives Iago private speeches that disclose his resentment, explain his schemes, and turn other characters into tools for his advancement. Effect: These speeches draw the audience into knowledge of the plot while revealing the calculated cruelty hidden beneath Iago’s helpful public manner.

Where: Scene 1.3, Scene 2.3, Scene 5.1

Symbolism

Method: Shakespeare makes the handkerchief represent marital love and fidelity, then turns its movement between characters into apparent evidence of sexual betrayal. Effect: The audience sees an ordinary possession acquire deadly authority, exposing how jealousy allows a misleading object to outweigh a person’s words and conduct.

Where: Scene 3.3, Scene 3.4, Scene 4.1

Foil

Method: Shakespeare contrasts Desdemona’s refusal to repay wrongdoing with Emilia’s argument that mistreated wives may answer their husbands with similar behavior. Effect: Their contrasting views help the audience distinguish principled loyalty from practical resistance and question the unequal expectations placed on husbands and wives.

Where: Scene 4.3

Foreshadowing

Method: Shakespeare has Desdemona request burial in her bed sheets and recall a song connected with an abandoned woman’s death before her own murder. Effect: These anticipations make the quiet bedroom conversation ominous and deepen the audience’s dread as Desdemona prepares for sleep without understanding the immediate danger.

Where: Scene 4.3

Juxtaposition

Method: Shakespeare places Othello’s calm defense of his marriage against his later public violence, making his changed behavior visible through sharply contrasting scenes. Effect: The contrast helps the audience measure Othello’s loss of self-command and see how private suspicion destroys the dignity associated with his public rank.

Where: Scene 1.2, Scene 1.3, Scene 4.1

Miljö

The action moves from urgent council business in Venice toward Cyprus, as reports trace Turkish forces near Rhodes. At the harbor in Cyprus, arrivals follow the storm that destroys the Turkish fleet. Public celebrations of victory and Othello's marriage place the unfolding conflict in a moment of apparent relief.

Context

The author

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, actor and poet who worked in London’s theatre world. He wrote Othello around 1603–1604, during the early reign of James I. The play draws on an Italian prose story but gives much greater weight to Iago’s plotting and to the pressures surrounding Othello’s marriage, military authority and trust in others.

The times

Venice ruled Cyprus until the Ottoman conquest of 1571, giving the play’s military emergency a concrete historical background. In Shakespeare’s England, Christian writers often treated Muslim powers as religious enemies, though trade and diplomacy also connected them. Among elite Venetian families, marriage concerned family standing as well as personal choice; Desdemona’s secret marriage challenges her father’s control without establishing that all women lacked choice.

How it was received

A court performance in 1604 shows that Othello reached royal audiences early. It later became a major stage tragedy, with leading actors making Othello and Iago celebrated roles. For much of its stage history, white actors played Othello in dark makeup. Today, performances and criticism often examine racism, domestic violence and the ways Iago turns assumptions about women into apparently convincing evidence.

Use Venice’s dependence on military service alongside racial and family prejudice to explain why Shakespeare makes Othello publicly valued yet vulnerable within his marriage.
