In Chapter 4, Gavroche joins an armed group whose march brings out Bahorel’s defiance and Enjolras’s demand for restraint. Gavroche admires Bahorel’s attack on a church notice, asks about his Latin, and then notices an elderly marcher whom the narrator identifies as M. Mabeuf.

  3. Enjolras urges Bahorel to conserve his anger, but Bahorel defends his actions as enjoyable preparation.
  4. Gavroche asks Bahorel about Latin and admires him as the armed crowd follows.
  5. Gavroche notices an elderly, unarmed man hurrying alongside them; the narrator identifies him as M. Mabeuf.
