Chapter 16 av 38 · 15 min att läsa chapter

In Chapter 16, Jane questions Grace Poole about the bedroom fire, but her suspicions remain unresolved, and she discovers that Mr. Rochester is away visiting a fashionable party. Hearing about Blanche Ingram’s beauty and accomplishments, Jane condemns her own romantic hopes and makes contrasting portraits to restrain her feelings.

Vad händer

  1. Jane finds Grace calmly repairing the bedroom curtains and questions her account of the fire.
  2. Grace asks what Jane hears at night and whether she bolts her door, making Jane increasingly suspicious.
  3. Jane waits eagerly for Mr. Rochester, then learns from Mrs. Fairfax that he leaves after breakfast for the Leas.
  4. Mrs. Fairfax describes Blanche Ingram’s appearance, accomplishments, and singing with Mr. Rochester at a Christmas gathering.
  5. Jane rebukes herself for imagining that Mr. Rochester might love her and resolves to compare herself with Blanche through portraits.
  6. Jane completes both pictures and finds that the work helps her control her feelings.
