- Four men seize Gurth in a dark lane and bring him to a clearing where two more masked robbers join them.
- Gurth explains whose money he carries, refuses to identify his master, and describes the payment to Isaac and the returned gold.
- While the Captain examines the purse, Gurth breaks free and strikes him, but the robbers capture Gurth again.
- The Captain exempts the knight's money from robbery and offers Gurth freedom if he defeats the Miller.
- Gurth stays calm, knocks the Miller down, and receives guides who escort him near the tournament grounds.
- Gurth reports everything to his master, who resolves not to benefit from Rebecca's generosity, and both settle to sleep.
