Sammanfattning av Hyperion, Part 3, Chapter 8

Part 3, Chapter 8 av 40 · 10 min att läsa chapter

In Chapter 8, Paul Flemming becomes absorbed in his love for Mary Ashburton and tells her a story about a rejected student seeking relief through forgetting. When the student chooses to preserve his beloved's name, Flemming replaces that name with Mary's and identifies himself with the lover at her feet.

Vad händer

  1. Flemming thinks constantly of Mary Ashburton, and his wounded affections attach themselves to her.
  2. While Mary sketches Burg Unspunnen, Flemming offers to invent a tradition set in the Black Forest.
  3. His story introduces Hieronymus, a learned student whose love for the dismissive Hermione interrupts his studies.
  4. A spirit from his lamp directs Hieronymus to cast a scroll bearing Hermione's name into the Fountain of Oblivion.
  5. At the water, Hieronymus sees remembered people and his younger self, then chooses to keep the scroll.
  6. Flemming changes Hermione's name to Mary, identifies himself as Hieronymus, and ends with verse about discovering love.
