Who Miss Watson is
Miss Watson lives in the household where the Widow Douglas takes Huck in and tries to make him a proper boy. While the widow offers kindness and religious guidance, her sister drills Huck in spelling and Bible stories. Miss Watson lectures him about heaven and hell, but Huck measures what she says against his loyalty to Tom Sawyer.
Miss Watson and the others in the story
Miss Watson's relationship with Jim reveals a troubling contrast between the household's religious teaching and its acceptance of slavery. Jim overhears her discussing selling him to a trader from New Orleans. He runs away because such a sale would separate him from his wife and children, who belong to someone else.
For Huck, Miss Watson represents rules he is expected to obey without question. His growing friendship with Jim brings those lessons into conflict with his own feelings.
