Who Eugene Onegin is

Eugene Onegin knows how to move through fashionable society, from dancing and flattery to theatre visits and balls. Yet pleasure has lost its charm, and his busy social life leaves him cold and weary.

When he inherits a country estate, its quiet and freedom briefly please him. He soon grows bored again, though he replaces the peasants' heavy labour duty with a lighter rent.

What Eugene Onegin wants

Onegin seeks relief from his weariness, but neither city pleasures nor country quiet can hold his interest. He also guards himself against feeling, convinced that love would fade and marriage would make another person unhappy.

Eugene Onegin and the others in the story

Vladimir Lensky becomes his friend despite their different temperaments, bringing sincere enthusiasm to Onegin's cooler world. Onegin listens patiently to the young poet's hopes and does not want to hurt him by mocking them.

When Tatyana Larina declares her love in a letter, Onegin respects her trust but refuses her. His answer is honest and gentle, yet his advice keeps her feelings at a distance.
