Sammanfattning av Ethics, Axioms I

Axioms I av 17 · 1 min att läsa chapter

In Axioms I, seven statements distinguish existence in itself from existence in something else and connect understanding, effects, and knowledge to their grounds or causes. They also state that true ideas correspond to their objects and that conceiving something as nonexistent means its essence does not include existence.

Vad händer

  1. The first two axioms distinguish existence in itself or another thing and require self-conception when conception through another thing is impossible.
  2. The third axiom makes an effect necessary given a definite cause and rules out effects without definite causes.
  3. The fourth and fifth axioms connect knowledge of effects to causes and deny mutual understanding between things with nothing in common.
  4. The sixth axiom requires a true idea to correspond to its object.
  5. The seventh axiom excludes existence from a thing’s essence if that thing can be conceived as nonexistent.
