Poemas de Currer, Ellis e Acton Bell in short

Taken whole, this book is a conversation among three sisters who loved the same hills and answered the same questions in different ways. Charlotte tells stories, with voices that argue, plead, or condemn. Emily goes inward and weighs grief, doubt, and the soul's claim to freedom.

What Poemas de Currer, Ellis e Acton Bell is about

What do a ghost in a doorway, a prisoner who greets death as a visitor, and a governess dreaming of home have in common? They all live in one small book of poems, written by three sisters who hid behind the names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë grew up in a Yorkshire parsonage and wrote verse from childhood. In 1846 they gathered their poems into one volume, each taking a man's name. Charlotte later added selections from her sisters' papers, with short notes. You get part poetry, part family portrait.

Para quem é. This book is for anyone who enjoys poems that tell stories, who is curious about the makers of the Brontë novels, or who loves moors, storms, faith, and longing for home.

The 9 key ideas

Three sisters share one book under male names

The book is a shared house of voices. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne each contribute a group of poems under a pen name. Currer is Charlotte, Ellis is Emily, and Acton is Anne. The names hide their sex and let the poems stand on their own merit.

The poems come in three sections, one for each sister. You move from narrative, to inward visions, to quiet prayer. After her sisters had died, Charlotte added short notes in her own voice. They tell you why Emily needed freedom and how Anne's faith weighed on her.

Home, the moors, separation, and death appear in all three sections. Yet the tones differ so much that you can tell the writers apart within a few lines. Take each section as a different room. In the first you meet characters, in the second a mind, in the third a conscience.

Three writers can share a book and still keep their own voices.
