Does salad days mean happy days or inexperienced days?
It can mean either, though youth and inexperience are central to its source. In Antony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra stresses her younger self’s lack of judgment. Modern speakers often use it more warmly for a happy, carefree early period.
Why does the phrase refer to salad?
Salad suggests green leaves, and green can also mean young or inexperienced. Cleopatra links these ideas when looking back at her youth in Antony and Cleopatra. The phrase is about immaturity, not about what she ate.
