Um dos nossos in short
One of Ours follows Claude Wheeler from a Nebraska ranch, where he is a clumsy, proud and unhappy boy, to the front in France. Along the way he meets a joking father, a devout mother, a faithful old servant, the Erlich family, and a wife who values duty above warmth. Each gives him something and takes something away.
What Um dos nossos is about
What happens to a young man who feels that the best of life is always happening somewhere else? Claude Wheeler wakes on a Nebraska farm on circus day, washes the car for a treat, and finds his father has arranged for him to haul stinking cowhides to town behind two braying mules.
One of Ours is a novel by Willa Cather, published in 1922. She based Claude on a cousin killed in France in 1918. It follows him from a creek-side ranch through a failed marriage and across the Atlantic to the trenches. You get a full portrait of a restless, decent, stubborn young man.
Para quem é. You will love this book if you enjoy a close study of one young life, rich prairie scenes, and war told through the quiet feelings of ordinary men.

Claude Grows Up Among Jokes and Mules
The story opens on Lovely Creek, near Frankfort, Nebraska. Claude is nineteen, red-haired and awkward, and he feels like the wrong sort of boy in the wrong sort of family. His father, Nat Wheeler, is a huge, easygoing man who teases anyone who is touchy. Claude is touchy.
Claude is sure his father watched him wash the car and then arranged the joke. His mother, Evangeline, is gentle and trusting, and she wants him saved by the church.
An older memory shows how deep the wound goes. When Claude is five, his father saws down a heavy cherry tree and calls it a joke. The boy screams with hatred and goes to the orchard for days to watch the tree wither. He is already afraid of being fooled, and he longs for someone he can admire.
Claude is not weak but misplaced, with an energy that has nowhere to go.
