Viagem ao Norte in short

Northern Travel follows one American through ten months in Scandinavia. The first half climbs north by post sled and reindeer to the Arctic Circle, with aurora skies, frozen mercury and the kindness of poor hosts. The second half turns to summer, with carrioles, fjords, waterfalls and the midnight sun.

What Viagem ao Norte is about

What would make two Americans leave a warm hotel in Stockholm and ride a sled toward the Arctic Circle in midwinter? Bayard Taylor answers in Northern Travel. He wanted to see the far North with his own eyes, then paint it in words for readers who would never go.

He made the trip in 1856 and 1857. He offers pictures, not statistics or politics, and he lives as nearly as he can like the people he meets. First comes a winter of post sleds, reindeer and aurora skies, then a summer of carrioles, fjords and the midnight sun.

Para quem é. You will enjoy this if you love armchair travel, vivid weather and landscape, local customs, and the frank voice of a nineteenth century American who tells you what he saw, ate and thought.

A Winter Crossing Begins on the Baltic

On December 1, 1856, Bayard Taylor and his friend Braisted board a small Swedish steamer at Lübeck, bound for Stockholm. Taylor's rule is to live the life of the people he meets and paint what he sees, not count and measure it.

The voyage turns grim on the third day. A fourteen-year-old cabin boy is thrown into the sea when the ship lurches. A boat is lowered, but the men bring back only his cap. The steward weeps and says the boy's mother begged him to take the lad.

Ice keeps the steamer from Stockholm, so it stops at little Dalarö. The travelers drive through pine forest in the dark, and every branch is coated with frost like silver on bronze. In Stockholm a sled shaft snaps, and a silent young Swede puts off his own return to see them safely into a hotel.

Northern travel brings hardship and unexpected kindness side by side.

Dúvidas sobre Viagem ao Norte

What is Northern Travel by Bayard Taylor about?

It is an account of Taylor's journey through Sweden, Lapland, Norway and Denmark in 1856 and 1857. He rides sleds and reindeer through the Arctic winter, then sails and drives through the northern summer, describing landscapes and people along the way.

Is Northern Travel a true story?

Yes, it is nonfiction. Taylor wrote it from his own journey, with his friend Braisted, and published it in 1858. It draws on his journals, and the places, hosts and many of the people he describes are real.

Who is Braisted in Northern Travel?

Braisted is Taylor's companion on the whole journey. He is a hardy former sailor who shares the cold, the hunger and the jokes, and he often speaks in nautical terms. His reactions give the book much of its humor.

Is Northern Travel easy to read?

Taylor writes in a lively, direct voice, with short scenes, humor and many conversations. Each chapter follows a stage of the trip, so you can follow it like a diary and enjoy the people and places as they come.
