Athena
Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, skilled crafts, and thoughtful warfare, and the protector of Athens. She often helps heroes succeed through judgment and courage. In classical stories, her support can save a life, while her anger can bring severe punishment.
Key stories of Athena
Athena restrains Achilles
Athena represents the restraint that can interrupt a warrior’s anger. Her help does not always mean urging someone into battle.
In The Iliad, Athena stops Achilles from drawing his sword against Agamemnon. Visible only to Achilles, she takes him by the hair and urges him to answer with words instead.
In The Iliad by Homer
Athena helps Odysseus return
Athena supports Odysseus through his long struggle to reach home and regain his household. She also helps his son Telemachus become more confident.
In The Odyssey, Athena disguises Odysseus as an old beggar after he reaches Ithaca. This lets him enter his own household without being recognised and judge the people waiting there.
In The Odyssey by Homer
The weaving contest with Arachne
Arachne challenges the goddess to a weaving contest. In the most common version, the contest ends with Athena punishing her rival, who becomes a spider.
In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the goddess, called Minerva, finds no fault with Arachne’s weaving but destroys the cloth in anger. Arachne is eventually transformed into a spider and continues to weave.
In Metamorphoses by Ovid

Are Athena and Minerva the same goddess?
Athena and Minerva are closely identified in Greek and Roman literature, though their religious backgrounds differ. Roman writers often tell Greek stories about Athena using the name Minerva, as Ovid does in Metamorphoses.
How is Athena different from Ares?
Athena usually represents warfare guided by planning and discipline, while Ares is more closely linked with battle’s violence and fury. This is a useful contrast, not an absolute rule: Athena can also be fierce and destructive, especially when defending her favourites.
