Ode
Pindaric ode
A formal ode arranged in groups of three stanzas. The first two follow matching patterns, while the third follows a different pattern.
At the opening of The Progress of Poesy, poetry is pictured as flowing water that nourishes flowers and gathers force. This grand celebration introduces a poem tracing poetry's power through different ages.
In The Progress of Poesy by Thomas Gray
Horatian ode
An ode with a repeated stanza pattern and a generally measured, reflective manner. It takes its name from the Roman poet Horace.
In An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland, the speaker considers Cromwell's rise but also pauses over Charles I's dignity at his execution. The poem weighs political change rather than offering simple praise.
In An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland by Andrew Marvell
Irregular ode
An ode whose stanzas vary in length or pattern rather than following the traditional Pindaric or Horatian arrangement. Its changing shape can follow turns in thought and feeling.
In Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood, the speaker notices that the natural world no longer has its childhood radiance. Later, reflection on childhood and human experience brings a quieter consolation.
In Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood by William Wordsworth
Como identificar uma ode
- Identify the person, thing, or idea receiving sustained attention.
- Look for praise, wonder, or serious reflection rather than a sequence of events.
- Check whether the stanza patterns repeat, form groups, or vary.

O propósito principal do poema ajuda a distingui-los.
