A rich doctor treats those nobody else will
John Silence is rich by accident and a doctor by choice. He keeps no consulting room and charges nothing at all. He takes only the cases that pay nothing and the cases that interest him for some special reason.
His patients are often artists with elusive afflictions of the spirit, and he becomes known as the Psychic Doctor. Most tales are told by his assistant, Hubbard, who watches closely and takes the notes. Silence trained for years in ways nobody can name, and he believes that thought can act at a distance and produce real effects.
His manner is gentle. He closes his eyes while a patient talks, so that he hears the thoughts behind the broken words. He holds a frightened man's hand and never treats him as mad. In every tale he arrives calm, curious and kind, and the fear in the room begins to ease. Real help starts with listening to a frightened person and believing what they say.

How it ends (spoiler)
Pender's house is cleared of its evil, and Flame the collie, struck blind that night, sees again when his master returns. Vezin escapes the cat town and dimly remembers fleeing along a moonlit road, though Silence fears his troubles are not over. At the manor Silence leaves the mummy in its grave and says it will cause no further disturbance if left alone. Silence rescues Harris from the burned ruins of the school. On the island Joan and Sangree find each other, and his wild double is quieted.
