Documentos Humanos in short

Human Documents is a set of stories about educated people caught by passion. Each tale takes one feeling, jealousy, pride, pity, grief or vanity, and follows it into a letter, a duel, a confession or a diary. De Roberto shows what people do and say, and lets the gap between words and feelings speak.

What Documentos Humanos is about

Can a love letter written at midnight survive the morning? In the first pages of Human Documents, a man pours out a confession of love, jealousy and despair, then walks out at dawn with a revolver.

Federico De Roberto, a writer from Catania in Sicily, published this collection in 1888. He followed Giovanni Verga and Luigi Capuana, and his publisher had turned down an earlier book because it showed only ugly things. Here he answers with stories of artists, duchesses, priests, counts and lawyers. Each tale is a small case study of the soul.

Para quem é. Readers who love tales of passion, jealousy and vanity, and who enjoy watching a mind at work. Fans of Verga, Maupassant and Bourget will find a sharp Sicilian voice.

The story in 10 parts

A midnight letter meets the morning

The collection opens with a letter written in the night to a woman who has tortured the writer with her charm. He tells her he will be dead when she reads it. His words swing wildly between insult, tenderness and blessing.

He says she tried her perfume, her smile and her voice on a hermit for the pleasure of the test. He swears jealousy is not his motive, then imagines tearing the heart out of the man she loves. A moment later he begs the Madonna to forgive his raving.

Then comes the surprise. Ferrieri says the writer of the letter is himself. He left his house at dawn with a revolver, but a small delay altered the morning, and in the cold light he judged his own tears as rhetoric. Yet he insists that a feeling can be true even if it later sounds like show.

A feeling does not become false because the morning makes it look foolish.

Dúvidas sobre Documentos Humanos

What is Human Documents by Federico De Roberto about?

It is a collection of short stories about love, jealousy, honor and self-deception among educated people. Each story explores one feeling through a letter, a duel, a confession or a diary, and shows how a mind sees itself.

What is the preface to Human Documents?

It is a letter from De Roberto to his publisher Treves, written in Catania in October 1888. It defends naturalism, explains why psychological analysis is a form of imagination, and shows how the stories answer his critics.

Are the stories in Human Documents connected?

They are separate tales, but they share themes. Many are told through letters, diaries or a friend's story, and several show the same event from two sides. Together they study how people explain their own feelings.

Is Human Documents a naturalist or an idealist work?

De Roberto calls the stories idealist, written to answer those who found his earlier book too dark. Their idealist method emphasizes psychological analysis, tracing noble feelings through the doubts and contradictions of the characters' inner lives.

Is Human Documents easy to read?

Most stories are short and built on strong scenes such as a duel, a confession, a letter or a portrait sitting. Their voices are lively and direct, and each can be enjoyed on its own in one sitting.
