Sardento in short
Freckles is the story of a nameless, one-handed boy who finds a home by guarding a wild swamp. A lonely boy is hired when no one else will have him, and every hardship teaches him something. Fear gives way to courage, courage to knowledge, and knowledge to a deep love of the place and the people around it.
What Sardento is about
What would you do if a stranger offered you the one thing you had never owned, a place to belong, and the price was walking alone through a swamp full of rattlesnakes? That is the bargain Freckles makes in the opening pages of this novel. He is a red-haired boy with one hand and no name, and he asks for work at a lumber camp at the edge of the Limberlost in Indiana.
Gene Stratton-Porter wrote the book as a nature lover, a photographer and a storyteller. Her knowledge of birds, moths and wildflowers fills every chapter. Beside it runs a warm, comic and sometimes tense adventure about timber thieves, loyal friends and a girl he calls the Swamp Angel. You meet the Scottish boss McLean, the Duncan family, the Bird Woman with her camera, and the thieves Wessner and Black Jack.
Para quem é. Readers who love wild places, birdsong and wildflowers will feel at home here, and so will anyone who enjoys warm-hearted adventure, loyal friendship and a young hero who wins trust through courage and kindness.

A nameless boy asks for a job
Freckles comes down the corduroy road at the edge of the Limberlost, looking like a tramp but wanting only honest work. He hears the men at the lumber camp and smells their supper. Loneliness sweeps over him, and he walks straight in to ask for the Boss.
The cook says the boy has only one hand. Freckles flushes and holds out his empty sleeve. The Boss, a Scotsman named McLean, says sharply that he will interview his own man. That small word, my, reaches the boy's hungry heart. McLean explains the job. Freckles must walk the wire boundary of two thousand acres of costly timber twice a day, among rattlesnakes, high water and thieves.
Then comes the boy's story. He was left as a baby on the steps of a charity home in Chicago, and he has no name. McLean hires him and gives him his own father's name, James Ross McLean. Until someone with a legal claim comes, he says, the boy is his. A job offered in trust can change a life faster than any amount of pity.
