Pedreiras de Flamsted in short

Flamsted Quarries follows one song and the lives it touches. A child in a New York theater sings a hymn, and a student, a financier and a priest hear it. The orphan Aileen Armagh grows up in Flamsted, Maine, where a granite boom is changing everything.

What Pedreiras de Flamsted is about

What happens when a child's hymn reaches the wrong ears, or perhaps the right ones? In a crowded New York vaudeville house, a small girl billed as the Little Patti sings about a green hill far away, and the gallery goes silent. Three men in the audience are stirred, and none will forget it.

Flamsted Quarries is a novel by Mary E. Waller. It follows the orphan Aileen Armagh from the stage to a city asylum and then to a granite town in Maine, where new quarries feed an old feud. You will see how ambition is sold as progress, and what it costs those who believe in it.

Para quem é. Readers who love American small-town sagas, stories of immigrants and workers, and warm, talkative characters will enjoy this book. It suits anyone drawn to ambition, loyalty and second chances.

The story in 10 parts

A child's hymn stirs three men in the audience

In a New York vaudeville house, the Little Patti has sung for six weeks. She stands in a snow scene as a match girl in rags, and the gallery roars its approval. Then she changes the mood.

Backstage the girl, whose name is Aileen, refuses the usual comic number. Nonna Lisa, the old Italian woman who looks after her, scolds and dresses her at once. She runs back on in white and sings a quiet hymn about a green hill far away. A woman sobs, and a man high above who draws breath to jeer has a wool cap pushed between his lips. When the gentleman in the box drops roses into her lifted skirt, there is no applause at all.

Three men are moved. One is a student, Champney Googe. One is the financier Henry Van Ostend. The third is the priest Father Honoré. At the theater door they brush past one another without a word.

One small song can set three lives on a shared course.
