The Buddha on wisdom

The Buddha taught that wisdom involved understanding how the mind shaped experience and how craving sustained suffering. It belonged to a path of careful awareness, ethical conduct and meditation, directed toward calm and freedom from ignorance. He connected this understanding with everyday practice: responding patiently to anger, loosening attachment to what could not last and making a steady effort in training. Wisdom, in his teaching, was closely tied to how a person thought and acted.
Wise company supported personal effort
He valued wise companions as support for an attentive life. Yet companionship did not remove personal responsibility. In the Dhammapada, each person remained responsible for their own training, and no one could perform another person's work of purification.
Inner training had outward effects
The Dhammapada linked the quality of thought with the consequences of speech and action. Its opening contrast connected troubled thoughts with suffering and pure thoughts with happiness. This gave attention to the mind a practical importance beyond private reflection.
The path avoided harsh extremes
His Middle Way rejected both indulgence and severe asceticism. Wisdom therefore belonged within a balanced discipline rather than a contest in self-denial. Ethical training, kindness, restraint, mindfulness and meditation formed parts of the path he taught toward release from suffering.
