Bob, Filho da Batalha in short

Bob, Son of Battle follows a feud between two farms under Muir Pike. At Kenmuir lives Owd Bob, the gentle gray sheepdog of James Moore. At the Grange lives Red Wull, the tailless brute of Adam M'Adam.

What Bob, Filho da Batalha is about

Can a dog be a gentleman? Old Tammas Thornton thinks so. He stands on a ladder in a stackyard beneath Muir Pike, telling anyone who will listen that the Gray Dogs of Kenmuir cannot be beaten.

Bob, Son of Battle is a novel by Alfred Ollivant, set among the lonely sheep farms of the northern Dales. It follows Owd Bob, the quiet gray sheepdog of James Moore, and Red Wull, the huge tailless brute of the bitter Scotsman Adam M'Adam. Between them stands David, M'Adam's son. You will meet a feud that grows from small insults into something darker, and a killer that stalks the flocks.

Para quem é. Readers who love dog stories, stormy moorlands, sheepdog trials and bitter family rivalries will enjoy this novel. It also suits those drawn to loyalty under strain.

The story in 11 parts

A young gray dog begins his work

The story begins at Kenmuir, a low gray farmhouse beneath Muir Pike. Old Tammas Thornton has served the Moores for more than fifty years and cannot stop praising the Gray Dogs, the line of sheepdogs the family has bred for generations.

He has fresh proof in young Bob. That morning a loose bull marched into the yard and knocked over the milk pail. Bob, not yet a year old, dodged every charge, nipped the bull by the tail and drove it back to its stall.

The Master, James Moore, is a lean, weather-beaten man who says little and means all of it.

The first lesson of the book is that a good dog carries a whole community's pride.

The bitter little man at the Grange

Dúvidas sobre Bob, Filho da Batalha

What is Bob, Son of Battle about?

It follows two rival sheepdogs in the northern Dales. Owd Bob, a gentle gray dog, belongs to James Moore, while the fierce Red Wull belongs to the bitter Adam M'Adam. Their feud spreads to their owners, the Dale Cup, and a sheep killer.

Who is the Tailless Tyke?

The Tailless Tyke is the Dalesmen's name for Red Wull, M'Adam's huge tawny dog whose tail was docked when he was a puppy. Tyke means a rough dog, and the name fits his fighting reputation.

What is the Dale Cup, or Shepherds' Trophy?

It is the silver cup awarded at the Northern Sheepdog Trials in Silverdale. Winning it three times would let a shepherd keep it outright, so it becomes the focus of the rivalry between Kenmuir and the Grange.

Is Bob, Son of Battle a true story?

No, it is a novel, though it draws on real sheepdog trials and farm life in the northern hills. Alfred Ollivant published it around the end of the nineteenth century, and the characters and places are invented.

Is Bob, Son of Battle easy to read?

The story moves quickly through short chapters full of lively dialogue, humor, and vivid scenes of storms and sheepdog contests. The Dale speech is light, and the plot is easy to follow from chapter to chapter.
