Na Casinha Marrom in short

At the Little Brown House follows six sisters on a small farm as they lose their mother and struggle to stay together. Gail keeps the family going, Faith earns money through baking, and Peace leaps from one plan to the next. Each chapter is a story in itself, yet together they build toward a threat to the farm.

What Na Casinha Marrom is about

What do you do when a tramp shows up at your gate and you are a small girl with big opinions? Peace Greenfield tells him he can have breakfast if he works for it. Then she hands him a list of chores long enough to fill a week.

Ruth Brown MacArthur wrote At the Little Brown House about six sisters on a mortgaged farm near the village of Parker. Their parents are gone, and Gail, the eldest, tries to be a mother to the rest. Peace is the quick-tongued heart of the tale. You get laughs, warm neighbors, and one growing question. Can six sisters keep their home and stay together?

The story in 10 parts

A dawn raid on flowers meets a tramp

The story opens on an early June morning in Parker. Three sisters try to creep out before Gail wakes. Peace leads the way, followed by Cherry and small Allee, whose dress hangs half buttoned. They want columbines and wood violets for the last day of school and for the new minister's reception that night.

On the road they wake a gray-haired tramp asleep behind the hedge. He speaks to the creek and the birds in fine, warm words. Later he finds the girls at their gate. Peace sits on the gatepost and questions him like a grown woman. She says the family never feeds beggars, but it does help the deserving poor. Then she lists every job on the farm, and Gail trims the list down to a pile of firewood. The man splits all of it.

Before he leaves, he tells Peace that city people would pay well for woodland flowers in little bark baskets. She tucks that idea away. A child's honest manner can win a stranger's respect.

How it ends (spoiler)

The tramp is Donald Campbell, president of a university in Martindale, who has watched the family for over a year and left the money on the gatepost. He has learned that Hiram Greenfield, known in childhood as Hi Allen, once saved him as an orphan. He and his wife adopt all six sisters, pay off the mortgage and bring them to a new home. Peace gets her drumstick, and Gail learns that love is everything.
