The book begins with one act of courage, a gypsy mother carrying her baby through a flood to a château door. That child, Dolores, is raised as a daughter of the house. When she and Philip learn the truth of her birth, love replaces the bond of brother and sister, but duty and the arrival of Antoinette stand in the way.

In March 1770 a young woman in patched clothes hurries along the river Gard with a newborn on her arm. She is running from her own tribe, who plan to take the child. Ahead of her lie a storm, a flooding river and a château on a hill.
Which? Which? Which? Or, Between Two Women is a novel by Ernest Daudet. It follows Dolores, a gypsy's daughter raised as a marquis's child, from a happy childhood in Provence to the darkest months of the Terror in Paris. Romance meets real history, and the title asks which woman Philip will marry and which will give way. You get a love triangle, a chase through a city of spies and a loyal servant named Coursegol.

A gypsy mother escapes with her baby
Tiepoletta is not yet twenty. She belongs to a wandering band of Bohemians, and her golden hair and fair skin set her apart. The tribe has never forgiven her for it. She married a kind man named Borachio, but he was found stabbed by the roadside. She gave birth to a daughter in a cave near the Pont du Gard.
The next evening she overhears her own mother, Corcovita, planning to seize the baby and abandon her. So Tiepoletta slips away with the child and walks through the night back toward the cave.
A roar wakes her. The river Gardon has burst its banks and covers the plain. She remembers a château on the hilltop, ties her child to her back and wades through water up to her waist. She reaches the door, pulls the bell chain and falls senseless.
Dolores begins life as a rescued child, and the book is about what she gives back.

How it ends (spoiler)
Dolores, condemned by the Revolutionary Tribunal, goes to the guillotine with Coursegol at her side. Just before her turn, Bridoul arrives with a pardon from Robespierre and saves them both. They hide in the Chévreuse valley, and Philip and Antoinette join them. Antoinette gives up her claim, and Philip and Dolores marry. They live in Louisiana and then rebuild Chamondrin. Years later Philip learns what Dolores tried to do.
