Water Margin, Chapter 1: samenvatting

Wat er gebeurt

1. After banishment and pardon, Gao Qiu passes through several households until Commandant Wang takes him into service.
2. Gao Qiu impresses Prince Duan with his ball playing and gains high military office after the prince becomes emperor.
3. Gao threatens the sick instructor Wang Jin, whose father once defeats him, prompting Wang and his mother to flee.
4. Wang sends his guards on temple errands, escapes before dawn, and travels toward Yan’an Prefecture while Gao orders his arrest.
5. An old squire shelters the travelers and provides medicine when Wang’s mother suffers heart pain.
6. Wang defeats the squire’s son Shi Jin, reveals his identity, and agrees to teach him practical fighting skills.

Waar je op kunt letten

Wang distinguishes display from practical fighting ability. His victory supports that judgment and gives him a way to repay the household’s care.
