Villette, Chapter 22: samenvatting

Wat er gebeurt

1. Unable to find privacy elsewhere, Lucy takes a candle and Dr. John’s letter into the cold attic.
2. The letter brings intense happiness, but a black-and-white figure resembling a nun frightens Lucy downstairs.
3. Lucy brings Madame Beck and her companions upstairs, where the candle is out and her letter seems missing.
4. Dr. John comforts Lucy, then returns the letter he secretly picks up and hides.
5. Lucy describes the figure privately, and Dr. John attributes it to mental strain while declaring himself free of Ginevra’s influence.
6. The attic search yields little evidence, Madame Beck requests silence, and Lucy remains uncertain about the apparition.
