Villette, Chapter 12: samenvatting

Wat er gebeurt

1. Lucy describes the garden’s ghost legend and makes its secluded alley her private retreat with Madame Beck’s approval.
2. She reflects on childhood, suppressed desires, and the powerful feelings a thunderstorm awakens in her.
3. An ivory box falls beside her, containing flowers and a love note whose writer mistakes her for another gray-clad woman.
4. Dr. John searches the garden, reads the note with distress, and asks whether Lucy intends to inform Madame Beck.
5. Lucy offers him the contents provided no pupils are involved, and he escapes as Madame Beck approaches.
6. Madame Beck treats Lucy with unusual warmth, which Lucy interprets as evidence of suspicion.
