Onder de perenboom in short
Under the Pear Tree is a crime story in which the mystery is less who did it than who will see it. Abel Hradscheck, a charming innkeeper, is drowning in debt, and his wife Ursel fears poverty above all. After a discovery in his garden, he lays a plan, spreads a story about an inheritance, and waits for a salesman from Krakow.
What Onder de perenboom is about
What does a respectable innkeeper do when his comfortable life is about to be taken from him? In Under the Pear Tree, Abel Hradscheck stands in his garden on an autumn day in the early 1830s and thinks: it is all mine, but for how much longer?
Theodor Fontane wrote this short crime novel in the 1880s and set it in the Oderbruch, the flat marshland along the river Oder.
Voor wie is het?. This is for readers who enjoy a crime story told through character, a village full of sharp portraits, and a storyteller with a quiet sense of humor.

A charming innkeeper is sinking into debt
The story opens in Tschechin, a prosperous village in the Oderbruch. Abel Hradscheck runs the inn and general store there. From the street he looks like a man who has done well.
The account book tells another story. The money from his rapeseed and his buyer Leist goes to principal and interest. A salesman from the Krakow firm Olszewski-Goldschmidt and Son is due any day to collect a bill three years old. Hradscheck also buys a lottery ticket and loses at cards, so the hole only grows deeper.
His wife Ursel was once very beautiful. Above all she fears poverty, which she calls worse than death. The two quarrel the way people do when money runs short, yet there is real attachment between them.
The neighbor Mother Jeschke watches it all over the garden fence. She casts charms and knows who will die, and Hradscheck wonders how much she sees.
Fontane builds his trap from ordinary things: a shop, a marriage and a debt.
