Oom Silas in short
Uncle Silas follows one young woman from a silent childhood to a house where her guardian may be her greatest danger. Her father leaves her a fortune, a key, and a will that places her in the care of a brother the county has long suspected. A frightening governess, a warning cousin, and a rough family each press on her in turn.
What Oom Silas is about
What would you do if the guardian your dead father picked for you were the one man your whole county suspects of murder? That is the problem facing Maud Ruthyn, a girl of seventeen who lives in a dark old house called Knowl with a silent, eccentric father. She has never met her uncle Silas, but she has grown up beside his portrait and a cloud of hints.
Uncle Silas was written by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, an Irish author who died in 1873. Maud tells the story herself, looking back on her youth. You get the whole shape of the book: a strange key, a frightening governess, a will with one odd clause, and a crumbling mansion in Derbyshire.
Voor wie is het?. This book suits readers who love candlelit mysteries, old houses with locked rooms, and narrators who feel every shadow. If you enjoy Gothic suspense and family secrets, you will feel at home.

A silent father hands Maud a key
The story opens at Knowl on a wild November night. Maud sits at the tea table while her father, Austin Ruthyn, paces the long room. He is a proud, lonely man and a follower of the mystic Swedenborg, and he can go a whole day without speaking to his daughter.
By candlelight he leads her into his library. He shows her an oddly shaped key and an oak cabinet by the door. She must remember both and tell no one, except that she must show them to a visitor, Doctor Bryerly, if he ever asks while her father is away.
Soon her father says he will go on a journey with a friend who cannot be refused. Maud wonders if the friend is Uncle Silas, who is said to be either unspeakably unfortunate or unspeakably wicked. Her father cuts off every question about his brother. A young woman is given orders she cannot understand and must trust.
The most frightening things in this tale are hints, not events.
