Twee op een toren in short
Two on a Tower follows a lonely noblewoman and a young astronomer who meet on a column in Wessex. Their talk of stars leads to gifts, a hidden marriage and secret meetings, while a bishop, a brother and a chorus of villagers circle around them. Every kindness has a price, and every secret has a witness somewhere in the trees.
What Twee op een toren is about
A lady in a carriage keeps looking at a tall column on a wooded hill. Her coachman cannot cross the plowed field, and weeks pass. When she finally climbs the column, she finds a young man on the roof with a telescope, watching a storm on the sun. He does not even turn his head. He only waves her away, as if she were a cloud in his light.
Two on a Tower is a novel by Thomas Hardy, set in Wessex. Hardy says he wanted to set the immensity of the cosmos against the feelings of two small people. You get a love story, village comedy and tense secrets, all beginning at an old column in a ring of fir trees.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy Victorian romance with a touch of science, village comedy, secret meetings by lantern light, and big questions about how small our lives look beneath the stars.

A lonely lady finds a young stargazer
Lady Constantine rides past a tall column on a hill planted with fir trees. It was built in memory of her husband's great-grandfather. She has lived within a mile of it for five years and never gone near.
Her husband, Sir Blount, is away hunting lions in Africa, and she is crushed by boredom. One dry February day she has her coachman drive across the plowed field and walks up through the dark trees alone. On the flat roof she finds a fair haired young man with a large telescope. He waves her away without turning his head.
He is watching a cyclone in the sun. He is Swithin St. Cleeve, grandson of a farmer's widow, and he means to become Astronomer Royal. He offers to rent the column, and she agrees to let him stay in the name of science.
Swithin lives in a thatched house with his grandmother and an old servant named Hannah. When the church choir practices, the farm workers argue with the parson about notes and pitch, and they give the book a chorus of country voices. They also know that Lady Constantine is neither maid, wife nor widow, since no word has come from her husband for two years. She tells the parson of a promise to live like a nun while he is gone, and he says a vow must be kept.
Takeaway: a chance meeting on a hilltop gives two lonely people a reason to look up.
