De Vrouwenbijbel in short
The Woman's Bible argues that the Bible has been used for centuries to hold women in a lower place, and that women have every right to read it for themselves. Stanton and her committee start with Genesis, where they find an equal creation, two stories that disagree, and an Eve who shows courage. They follow the patriarchs' wives, the prophets and queens, then turn to Jesus, Paul and the early church.
What De Vrouwenbijbel is about
What if the people most affected by a book were the first to sit down and read it closely? In 1895 Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the American suffrage leader, gathers a committee of women to do just that with the Bible. They mark passages about women, paste them into a blank book, and write their thoughts underneath.
The Woman's Bible is the result, published in two parts in 1895 and 1898. It comments on the Bible rather than translating it anew. Its tone moves between sharp argument, dry humor and open admiration. You get the main ideas of the whole work, in order.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like Bible study, women's history, the suffrage story, or lively arguments about religion and law. It suits readers who love sharp commentary.

Women should read and comment on Scripture themselves
The Woman's Bible begins as a plan. In her 1895 introduction, Stanton recalls proposing six years earlier that women publish commentaries on women's position in the Old and New Testaments. A committee of about thirty women, helped by scholars of Greek and Hebrew, is to share the work.
The method is practical. Women read from Genesis to Revelation and mark passages about women. Stanton cuts them out, pastes them into a blank book, and writes her comment underneath.
Her reason is plain. Men have written every creed, code and commentary, so the view of women is missing. She asks why it should be ridiculous for women to revise Moses when women have already forced legislators to revise their statutes. Some say it is unwise to stir up religious opposition, but she calls that policy cowardice.
Women who have been told what Scripture says about them can read it and answer for themselves.

Vragen over De Vrouwenbijbel
What is The Woman's Bible about?
It is a commentary on the passages of Scripture that mention women or leave them out. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a committee of women read from Genesis to Revelation and ask what each text says about women and what churches and laws have made of it.
Is The Woman's Bible a new translation of the Bible?
No. It is a set of comments printed under selected passages, not a new translation. Stanton works from the revised English edition of 1888 and stresses plain English, while another contributor also draws on Julia Smith's translation.
Who wrote The Woman's Bible and when?
Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the project and wrote many of the comments, with other committee members signing their own. Part One appeared in 1895 and Part Two, from Joshua to Revelation, followed in 1898.
Why did the suffrage association turn away from it?
In January 1896 the National American Woman Suffrage Association voted 53 to 41 to state it had no connection with the book. Many members feared that attacking the Bible would harm the campaign for the vote, though Susan B. Anthony spoke against the resolution.
What is the main message of The Woman's Bible?
Stanton argues that texts written by men have long been used to place women in a lower sphere, and that women should read, question and answer them. She also praises the strong women Scripture records, from Deborah and Huldah to Phebe and Priscilla.
