Het wilde Ierse meisje in short
Horatio Mortimer begins numb, ruined and full of prejudice, and he ends up studying the language, history and songs of a country he once despised. The people he meets, from Murtoch on the road to the Prince in his ruined hall, teach him that warmth and pride can live in poverty. Along the way he falls in love with Glorvina and hides his name to keep her.
What Het wilde Ierse meisje is about
What happens to a young man who has stopped enjoying anything when his father sends him into exile on an Irish estate? Horatio Mortimer expects bogs, rags and savages. Instead he meets a starving peasant who shares his last comfort, a priest who quotes Horace, and a girl who sings to a harp in a ruined castle.
The Wild Irish Girl was written by Lady Morgan and published in 1806. It is a novel told in letters, packed with songs, legends and notes on history. You get a love story, a travel book and an argument about a whole country.

A spendthrift son is sent into Irish exile
Horatio sits in London's King's Bench prison. He has wasted his money on gambling, fashionable friends and an affair with a married woman. His father, the Earl of M, pays every debt. The price is a summer in Ireland, on the family estate in Connaught, with his mind on law books.
Horatio finds this kindness harder to bear than a punishment. His heart is cold, and he cannot enjoy music or poetry.
He treats the trip as banishment to a half barbarous country. A childhood book told him that Irish chiefs once sat naked around their fires, and the picture has hardened into prejudice.
A bored man with a closed mind is the right traveller for a book about changing your view.
