De Toren van Roze Pracht in short
The Tower of Pink Adornment tells how a corrupt chancellor tries to wipe out the family of an honest general, and how the survivors gather friends from every corner of the empire. It moves from a marriage pledge through a tiger hunt, a garden brawl and a forged report into prison rescues and bandit camps. What stays with you is loyalty at work.
What De Toren van Roze Pracht is about
Why would a chancellor alter a general's report from the front, and send a whole family to the execution ground? In The Tower of Pink Adornment, Shen Qian does exactly that, and two brothers escape to answer him.
This Chinese historical novel is set in the Qiande era of the Tang dynasty and attributed to Luo Guanzhong. Its short chapters each stop on a hook, like a teahouse storyteller. Loyal families face a corrupt court, with brawls, sworn brothers, bandit strongholds and brave women between. You get the whole tale, scene by scene, beginning at a farewell banquet where a marriage is promised.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love martial adventure, sworn brotherhood, daring rescues and courtroom schemes will enjoy this old tale, as will those drawn to palace intrigue.

A farewell banquet seals a marriage pledge
The empire is at peace, but the court is divided. Duke Luo Zeng of Yue is upright, and he stands against the chancellor Shen Qian, who sells offices and titles for money. Shen cannot find a way to harm him, so he waits. Then Tatars rebel at the border, and Shen urges the emperor to send Luo Zeng to fight them.
Before he leaves, the duke invites three friends to dinner. One of them, the commander Bai Wenlian, has only a daughter, Yushuang, and he takes a warm liking to the duke's younger son. Right at the table the families agree to a betrothal. Luo Zeng hands over a pair of jade rings, and Bai writes his daughter's birth details on red silk.
The next morning, as the duke mounts his horse, a wild wind snaps the central command flag in two. The officials turn pale.
A promise between friends can carry more weight than a chancellor's power.
