Het lijden van de jonge Werther in short

The Sorrows of Young Werther follows a sensitive young man who leaves a town, finds happiness in a country village, and falls in love with Charlotte, who is engaged to a steady, decent man named Albert. Letter by letter, his joy in nature and children turns into a trap of longing. What you keep is a clear picture of how strong feeling can make life brighter and also more dangerous.

What Het lijden van de jonge Werther is about

What would you do if you met the person you were meant to love, and she already belonged to a good man? That is the trouble of Werther, a young man who goes to a country village in May and writes to his friend Wilhelm about all he feels.

The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is a novel told in letters. It came out in 1774 and drew on feelings Goethe knew well. Its hero is an artist at heart, quick to joy and quick to pain. Through his eyes you get a green spring, a ball broken by a storm, and a fall into despair. The summary stops short of the tale's ending.

Voor wie is het?. Readers who love letters and diaries, passionate young narrators, country scenes, and stories that follow every feeling closely. It suits anyone drawn to first love, nature and poetry.

The story in 8 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Werther flees to the country and finds peace

The book opens in May, and its first lesson is that Werther runs toward feeling. He has left his town and a young woman named Leonora, whose tender heart he fears he has hurt. He promises his friend Wilhelm that he will stop brooding over the past and enjoy the present.

Then comes the place itself. He makes a ruined summerhouse in a count's garden his own retreat. He lies in the tall grass by a stream and watches the tiny life among the stalks, and he feels the nearness of God. He says he cannot draw a single line, and yet he has never felt more like an artist.

He is fond of ordinary people too. At the fountain outside town he helps a servant girl lift her pitcher. In Walheim, beneath two great linden trees, he sketches a small boy holding a baby brother between his knees. He meets a farmhand in love with an older widow, whose pure devotion moves him deeply.

Nothing grand happens in these early letters, and that is the point. Werther feels everything more strongly than those around him. This gift makes him happy, and the book quietly shows that it will also make him fragile.

Werther's open heart gives him joy first, and the same openness is where his trouble will start.

Werther's last days are told by an editor, who gathers facts after his death. Werther helps a man accused of murder but cannot save him, and Charlotte asks him to stay away until Christmas Eve. He comes anyway, reads Ossian to her, and kisses her, and she sends him from the room. The next morning he borrows Albert's pistols, which Charlotte hands over, and that night he shoots himself. He lives some hours and dies at noon. He is buried at night beneath the lime trees, with no priest.
