Wat er gebeurt

1. Outside the prison, women debate Hester Prynne’s sentence, with some demanding branding or death and one younger wife expressing sympathy.
2. Hester emerges carrying her infant, resists the beadle’s handling, and reveals a richly embroidered red A on her gown.
3. The beadle leads her through the crowd to the market square, where she climbs the scaffold without being confined in the pillory.
4. Officials watch from a balcony as the crowd’s solemn silence makes Hester’s exposure almost unbearable.
5. Hester recalls her English childhood, her parents, an older scholar, and life in a Continental city.
6. She clutches her baby and touches the letter, confirming that her public shame is real.
