De gevaarlijke solitaire olifant in short

The Rogue Elephant follows a handful of people from a New York club to the edge of the map. Schoverling takes the taxidermist von Hofe and two young woodsmen into elephant country with a small party. They meet a rhino, a forest herd, a desert, a dead raider's last letter, and a lake that seems to have grown its own monsters.

What De gevaarlijke solitaire olifant is about

What would you do if a letter told you to quit your job and come to New York for a voyage to Africa? Charlie Collins, a young electrician's apprentice in Calgary, shouts, grabs his pay, and goes.

Elliott Whitney wrote The Rogue Elephant for young readers, in the years when museums sent expeditions abroad to build lifelike animal groups. An American explorer, Louis Schoverling, called the General, leads the party. With him go a German taxidermist, Dr. Gross von Hofe, and two teenage woodsmen, Charlie and a Cree boy named Jack Sawtooth. You get a journey from New York to the wild country north of Mount Kenya, and a rumor of a monstrous outlaw elephant.

Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like expedition tales, big-game country, loyal friendships, clever field craft, and young heroes who earn their place.

A letter sends two boys to Africa

The story starts in the Explorers' Club in New York, where von Hofe pounds a table. Schoverling has said he wants to bring boys on an elephant hunt. The German calls him crazy as a loon. Schoverling answers calmly. He will command the trip and pick the party.

Two museums have asked von Hofe for a family of elephants each. The doctor is an artist, and he refuses at first to touch a gun. So the shooting and guiding fall to Schoverling.

Five days later a letter reaches Charlie in Calgary. The letter tells him to come east and bring Jack Sawtooth, a seventeen-year-old Cree whom Charlie has never met.

Jack thinks Africa must be a joke until he sees the letter and a check. The two like each other at once and take the train east together. Both boys are used to hard work and relying on themselves, and that is why a seasoned explorer wants them.

A good companion is worth more than any amount of equipment.

How it ends (spoiler)

Charlie and Jack stop the charging rogue elephant with their heavy rifles. Charlie shatters his forelegs and Jack fires the finishing shots, and a falling tusk stuns Amir Ali. The party skins the giant and loads ivory and hide on the wagon. They cross the desert home, report Mowbray's fate and the lake country, and Schoverling is made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Months later the mounted rogue stands in a museum, credited to the boys and von Hofe.
