Wat er gebeurt

1. The writer presents Italy’s misery as an opportunity for a new prince, comparing it with conditions that reveal Moses, Cyrus, and Theseus.
2. He identifies the house he addresses as Italy’s best hope and argues that divine favor still requires human action.
3. He blames Italian military failures on poor leadership and institutions rather than a lack of individual courage.
4. He urges the house to raise its own soldiers, commanded, honored, and supported by their prince.
5. He examines Spanish and Swiss weaknesses to propose infantry capable of resisting both cavalry and opposing infantry.
6. He closes by imagining an enthusiastic welcome for a liberator and invoking Petrarch’s verse about enduring Italian courage.
