De Toverdoos in short
The nine tales share one idea. Appearances can be arranged, and the truth lies in details that nobody bothered to arrange. A casket, a ditch, a train carriage, a razor, a box, a hair, two bottles of blood and a ruined laboratory each look ordinary.
What De Toverdoos is about
What could make a cheap little casket worth chasing across two continents? On a misty London night, Dr. John Thorndyke finds an abandoned handbag in a church porch. Within hours, strangers watch the owner's door, and an old solicitor asks him to explain a trinket nobody should want.
The Magic Casket gathers nine stories by R. Austin Freeman, a trained physician who created Thorndyke, a lawyer and medical scientist. His friend Dr. Jervis tells the tales, and he sees every clue and understands almost none of them. You get each case, the people in it, and the one small fact that Thorndyke notices before anyone else.
Voor wie is het?. This book suits readers who love clever puzzles, Victorian and Edwardian London, and detectives who win with a lens, a microscope and quiet observation.

A stolen bag leads to a casket
On a misty November night in Chelsea, Thorndyke and Jervis find a forced-open handbag in a church porch. Its lock has been forced. Inside are pieces of Chinese pottery, each with a museum label bearing the name of Miss Mabel Bonney of Fulham.
They carry the bag to her street, and a worried maid takes it with relief. Soon the old solicitor Mr. Brodribb arrives and tells the history behind the evening. Miss Bonney's father, a solicitor, was murdered, and a bag of huge pearls vanished the same night.
Later, a Japanese metalworker named Uyenishi dies in a California prison, and its governor gives her his small figure-shaped casket. Burglars search her rooms, and men follow her to London. Thorndyke studies the casket with a loupe and finds the bottom is made of finer metal and carries hidden decoration.
Small oddities that serve no purpose are often where a message hides.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Dr. John Thorndyke A medical jurist and barrister who solves each crime by close observation and quiet science, trusting only what he checks himself.
- Dr. Jervis Thorndyke's friend and junior, who tells the stories and often misses the clue that his colleague has already seen.
- Polton Thorndyke's skilled laboratory assistant, who makes instruments and slides and appears silently with refreshments.
- Mr. Brodribb An old solicitor with a hearty knock and a firm faith in Thorndyke's powers, who brings clients to his door.
- Superintendent Miller A Scotland Yard detective who works alongside Thorndyke and is both ally and friendly rival.
- Miss Mabel Bonney A gentle woman who has paid for her father's lost pearls and is followed because of an odd casket.
- Inspector Badger A sarcastic police inspector who mocks Thorndyke's methods and discovers how much care they require.
How it ends (spoiler)
In each tale the explanation closes the case. The casket reveals the pearls' hiding place, the false death is exposed and planted evidence against innocent suspects is unravelled. The innocent are freed, and the guilty are arrested or lost in their own traps. Thorndyke explains his reasoning to Jervis, who admits his blindness. The collection ends with a murderer's arrest in Wimbledon, as Miller jokes about a smoke rocket.
