Naar de diepten in short

The Lower Depths shows a handful of lodgers in a cellar where hopes of rising struggle against poverty. A greedy landlord and his wife rule over them, a thief falls for the landlady's sister, a woman dies of her illness, and an old pilgrim named Luka offers comfort to anyone who will take it. What you keep from the play is a set of questions.

What Naar de diepten is about

Picture waking each day in a cave-like cellar with a low, grimy ceiling, peeling plaster and bunks along the stone walls. Hope survives here, but it struggles against poverty. Then an old wanderer walks in with a kettle and a teapot at his belt, and says one place is as good as another.

The Lower Depths is a play in four acts by Maksim Gorky, first staged in Russia in 1902. It is set in a night lodging run by a greedy landlord and his sharp-tongued wife. Gorky knew poverty from his own youth, and he gives these people a voice instead of pity.

Voor wie is het?. This is for readers who love drama built on talk, crowded rooms and sharp tongues, and for anyone drawn to people at the bottom of society who still argue about hope and dignity.

A cellar where nobody expects a tomorrow

The play opens on an early spring morning in a cellar that looks like a cave. The ceiling is low and grimy, and bunks line the walls. Thin boards in one corner make a tiny room for the thief Vaska Pepel.

The people are already quarrelling. Kvashnya, a meat-pie seller, swears she would not marry again for a hundred baked lobsters, and the locksmith Kleshtch tells her she is lying. Behind a curtain, Kleshtch's wife Anna coughs, and she asks only to be left in peace to die.

Gorky gives each person a scrap of the past. Bubnoff the cap-maker once had a fur shop. Satine was once a telegraph operator who read many books. Everyone here used to be somebody, or says so.

Kleshtch calls the others scum and swears he will crawl out of the cellar, even if he leaves his skin behind. The landlord Kostilyoff counts every half ruble and threatens to raise his rent while the man's wife is dying. Money, lust and fear of the police all press in from above.

There is no single hero here. The crowd is the subject.

The cellar shows that poverty is not only hunger but a daily loss of names, work and hope.

Vragen over Naar de diepten

What is The Lower Depths about?

It follows the lodgers of a dismal cellar night lodging in Russia. A thief, a locksmith, a fallen baron, an actor and others live under a greedy landlord, and a wandering old man named Luka changes how they hope and argue.

Who is Luka in The Lower Depths?

Luka is an old pilgrim who arrives at the lodging with a stick and a bundle. He comforts the dying, encourages the drunk and the thief, and tells stories that make others hope, which leads to arguments about whether kind lies help.

When was The Lower Depths written and is it based on real life?

Gorky wrote it around 1902, and it was first staged in Russia that year. The characters are invented, but they draw on the poor and homeless people he knew from his own hard youth.

Is The Lower Depths easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that it is built largely from lively exchanges in the lodging and its adjoining yard. Each lodger has a clear voice and a clear want, so the quarrels, jokes and stories are easy to follow even without background knowledge.

What is the main message of The Lower Depths?

The play asks whether people need truth, comfort or dignity most. Through arguments among its lodgers, it shows how kindness, illusion and honest speech each help and hurt, and it leaves the choice to the listener.
