De verloren prins in short
The Lost Prince follows Marco Loristan, trained from childhood to keep silent, remember everything, and serve a cause he is not yet allowed to understand. A legend five hundred years old gives that cause its heart. A crippled street boy, The Rat, invents a game that begins to match what the grown men around Marco are quietly planning.
What De verloren prins is about
What would you do if your whole life were a secret, and the only person you could tell was your father? Marco Loristan, a boy of twelve, lives that life. He has moved from country to country with his father and an old soldier-servant, and at seven he took an oath on a drawn sword that he keeps every hour.
The Lost Prince was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, who also wrote A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. It appeared in 1915 and follows a secret mission from London through Europe to the imagined country of Samavia. You will meet a fierce street boy, a lovely spy, a dark cellar, and four small words that cross Europe.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy secret missions, journeys through old European cities, warm friendships, and stories where courage means keeping a steady mind.

A Boy Raised in Silence and Exile
The story opens in the dreariest corner of London, Philibert Place. Marco Loristan, a tall, dark, quiet boy, stands at the railings after a hurried journey from Russia. His father may wake him any night and tell him to dress, because they are moving again.
Marco has never seen his homeland, Samavia, yet he knows its maps by heart. His father, Stefan Loristan, has told him of its beauty and its sufferings since he was small. The family is poor, but Loristan carries himself so nobly that people stand when he enters a room.
The training is unusual. Marco has learned five languages and never shows surprise. He studies faces and streets, and each night he describes everything he has seen to his father. When boys ask what his father does, Marco says he is a writer, which is true.
A quiet life with a clear aim can shape a person more than comfort does.

Vragen over De verloren prins
What is The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett about?
It follows Marco Loristan, a poor boy raised in exile, and his friend The Rat. Together they carry a secret message across Europe for the people of Samavia, inspired by an old legend of a vanished prince.
Is Samavia a real country?
No. Samavia is an imagined mountain country. Burnett drew on the troubled Balkans and central Europe of her day, and wrote the book in 1915 while war filled the news.
What does the Lamp is lighted mean?
It is the secret signal Marco and The Rat deliver in four words to hidden friends of Samavia. The Sign brings powerful responses, including thanksgiving, tears, and prayer, and the phrase builds a sense of mounting hope.
Who is The Rat in The Lost Prince?
The Rat is Jem Ratcliffe, a clever, fierce, hunchbacked boy who leads a gang of London street boys. He becomes Marco's closest friend and aide-de-camp, and trains himself to travel on crutches.
Is The Lost Prince easy to read?
Yes, in a good sense: it has short chapters, a clear, warm voice, vivid scenes like the dark cellar and the storm in a garden, and a clean forward drive that carries readers along.
