Het verloren landgoed in short
The Lost Estate follows a school year and the years after it, seen through one boy's eyes. A tall newcomer called Meaulnes arrives at Sainte-Agathe, drives off in a borrowed carriage, loses his way and stumbles into a fairy-tale festival. There he meets Yvonne de Galais and glimpses a grieving young man called Frantz.
What Het verloren landgoed is about
A tall boy in a peasant's smock finds a blackened firework wheel in a school attic and lights it in the dark courtyard. Within days the boys of Sainte-Agathe follow him everywhere. Within weeks he vanishes in a borrowed carriage and finds a house where children give the orders.
The Lost Estate is the only finished novel of Alain-Fournier, a French writer who died in 1914 in the first weeks of the First World War. François Seurel, the schoolmaster's son, tells it years later.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love coming-of-age stories, friendships that shape a whole life and the ache of first love will feel at home here, among village schools, winter roads and a fairy-tale house.

A stranger arrives and school comes alive
On a cold Sunday in November, a widow brings her son Augustin Meaulnes to the upper school at Sainte-Agathe. He is about seventeen. François Seurel, who is fifteen and tells the story, watches him with fear and delight.
François has been a timid, lonely child. A hip illness keeps him close to home. Meaulnes ends that loneliness within hours. He explores the attics and comes down with a blackened wheel from last summer's fireworks.
He takes François into the courtyard and lights two rockets that never went off. François's mother, Millie, steps outside to see red and white stars bursting under the playground roof.
Some twenty older boys now follow Meaulnes through the village. Jasmin Delouche, until now the cock of the walk, begins to resent him. Quiet listeners are often planning something.

Vragen over Het verloren landgoed
What is The Lost Estate about?
It tells of a schoolboy named Augustin Meaulnes, who arrives at a village school, goes astray in a borrowed carriage, and finds a mysterious estate and a girl he loves. The story is told by his friend François.
Who tells the story in The Lost Estate?
François Seurel, the schoolmaster's son, tells it as an adult looking back. He watches Meaulnes, follows him, and sometimes describes events he learned of only later, which gives the book a tone of memory.
Is The Lost Estate a true story?
It is a novel, published in 1913, but it draws on the author's own memories of schools and landscapes in central France. The characters and the estate are invented, though the setting feels real.
What does the Lost Estate stand for?
The estate stands for a moment of perfect happiness, like a childhood dream. Meaulnes discovers it by accident and spends years searching for it, so it comes to mean a youthful ideal that is hard to hold.
Is The Lost Estate easy to read?
Its chapters are short, and its scenes are vivid, like a village school, a snowy ambush or a lantern-lit party. The narrator speaks plainly and warmly, so the story is easy to follow as it moves from school to dreamlike adventure.
