Het oude mannetje van Batignolles in short
The collection opens with a memoir meant to teach that crime fails. In The Little Old Man of Batignolles, a student with a gift for seeing and a detective with a snuffbox take a confession apart by looking at one hand and one cork. Around it stand five tales that ask what lies behind a respectable face.
What Het oude mannetje van Batignolles is about
What would you think of a quiet neighbor who carries a snuffbox, keeps odd hours, and comes home one night with his face cut open? A young medical student in Paris asks himself that question, and the answer takes him to a room in Batignolles where an old man lies dead and a name is written on the floor in blood.
This collection comes from Émile Gaboriau, the French writer who helped shape the detective story. The main piece is the memoir of J.-B. Casimir Godeuil, who wants to prove that crime never pays. Around it stand five shorter tales. You get a detective who reasons from small things and a gentle satire of money and appearances.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like clue-hunting detectives, Paris streets, gentle satire of money and pride, and love stories where the heart wins over a fortune.

A stranger's manuscript brings a detective's memoir
One day a man of about forty, neatly dressed in black, leaves a handwritten manuscript at the offices of the Petit Journal. The pages sit untouched until a reader unties the string. He is hooked, and soon the whole staff agrees the paper must print it.
There is one problem. The pages carry no author's name, only a card reading J.-B. Casimir Godeuil, with no address. The editors put up mysterious posters, and for a week Paris wonders who he is. Before the paste is dry, Godeuil hurries in, and a deal is made to print his memoirs.
His preface explains his purpose. He once watched a thief, beaten by the evidence, cry out that he would have stayed honest had he known what means the law possesses. Godeuil wants to show crime as cowardly and base. With the railroad and the electric telegraph, he argues, no one escapes.
The story begins when Godeuil is twenty-three, a medical student in a tiny room on Rue Monsieur-le-Prince. His neighbor, Monsieur Méchinet, slips out before dawn and vanishes for weeks. One day he wears medals, and another day a filthy smock. Then one night he bursts in with a bleeding cut from ear to mouth, and the student bandages him and keeps quiet.
Crime is a poor bargain, and ordinary police work is the proof.

Vragen over Het oude mannetje van Batignolles
What is The Little Old Man of Batignolles about?
It tells how a young medical student and his neighbor, a Paris police detective, investigate the murder of an old man in Batignolles. A name written in blood and a confession both seem to settle the case, but small clues point elsewhere.
Who is Monsieur Méchinet?
He is a Paris detective who lives across the landing from the narrator. He pretends to take snuff when moved, consults his clever wife, and prefers gathering facts quietly from shopkeepers to making speeches.
What else is in this collection besides the detective story?
It also holds Happiness Over Wealth, a love story between a viscount and a lace mender, Nessus's Cassock, set at a seminary, and three short tales: A Disappearance, A Cursed House, and She Lived Chastely.
Is The Little Old Man of Batignolles a true story?
No, it is fiction written by Émile Gaboriau, who died in 1873. It is presented as the memoir of a fictional narrator, Godeuil, but it draws on the real world of Paris police and courts.
What is the main message of the book?
The detective memoir argues that crime is cowardly and does not pay, because careful police work and modern tools catch wrongdoers. The other tales add a theme of honesty and love against money and show.
