De heuvel in short
The Hill follows one boy through his years at Harrow, and the heart of it is a friendship. John Verney arrives alone and shy, loves the bright Henry Desmond, and finds that the clever and cold Scaife wants Desmond too. Around that triangle the book builds a school, with its games, a decayed house and the housemaster who works to mend it.
What De heuvel is about
What does a boy carry up a hill on his first day at a new school? John Verney carries one unused gun cartridge, a gift from his explorer uncle, and a lump in his throat. Within the hour a curly-haired stranger smiles at him by mistake, and that smile shapes the next five years of his life.
The Hill is a romance of friendship by Horace Annesley Vachell, finished in 1905. He shows a public school as it looked in his day, with its songs, nicknames, games and unwritten rules. You follow John as he loves Henry Desmond, called Caesar, while the cold and clever Scaife pulls at Caesar from the other side.
Voor wie is het?. Readers who love school stories, cricket, football and loyal friendships will enjoy this book. It suits those drawn to vivid boys, warm humour, English songs and a quiet struggle between good and bad influences.

A shy new boy climbs the Hill
The story opens on the platform of Harrow station. John Verney, aged thirteen, has just seen off his uncle, the explorer, a small, thin man the boy has worshipped from far away. The uncle says Harrow is like a big river, with rocks and rapids, and that after the first plunge John will enjoy it.
At the iron gate below the steep path a lump rises in John's throat. He pulls out his cure-all, an unused twenty-bore cartridge from the gun his uncle gave him. The sight of it makes him smile, and he strides uphill, proud to board at the Manor.
Near the chapel a curly-haired boy smiles at him and says he met John's father out shooting. John answers that his father died when he was a kid. The boy apologises and gives his name as Desmond. Soon John learns that the Manor has gone downhill, though the Head of the House, Lawrence, greets him kindly.
That night John lies awake and sees the church spire and Desmond's laughing face. Then a dark figure grows until it blots out the spire. A first day can plant a friendship and a fear in the same hour.

Vragen over De heuvel
What is The Hill by Horace Annesley Vachell about?
It follows John Verney through his years at Harrow School. He falls deeply in friendship with Henry Desmond, while a charming, scheming rival named Scaife competes for Desmond's loyalty. Games, a housemaster's reforms and a series of school scandals shape the story.
Who is Scaife, and why is he called the Demon?
Reginald Scaife is a rich, clever, handsome athlete, the son of a Liverpool millionaire. His schoolmates nickname him the Demon for his daring, temper and cold will. He admires Desmond and wants to keep him, which sets him against John.
Is The Hill a true story, and when was it written?
It is a novel, finished in 1905, though it draws on real Harrow life, songs and customs. The author says the characters are composite portraits rather than real people, and that the drinking and gambling scenes come from isolated incidents.
What do the Harrow terms like Bill, fez and fagging mean?
Bill is the roll call held in the Yard. A fez is a coloured cap awarded for house team play. Fagging means a younger boy doing small jobs for an older one. The book explains them through scenes, so they are easy to follow.
What is the main message of The Hill?
The book says friendship tests character and that loyalty is shown in deeds, not talk. It also shows how a good teacher, a school's songs and traditions, and honest effort can help a boy grow.
