De Groene Muis in short
The Green Mouse is a string of linked comic romances held together by one absurd invention. A ruined young man finds that his skill with magic and animals wins him a bride, and his invention becomes the basis of a company matching destined partners. The Carr sisters meet courtship through games, accidents and disobedience, while Flavilla insists on taking her chances without the machine.
What De Groene Muis is about
What does a ruined young gentleman do when his only assets are conjuring skills and a strange power over animals? In The Green Mouse, Robert W. Chambers opens with just such a man.
An inventor builds a tiny machine that catches a person's psychic waves and sends them to the one partner fate has chosen. You follow the Carr family through comic courtships, watched over by a company that sells love by wireless.
Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy quick, funny romances, absurd inventions and a father who bellows through a monocle. It suits readers who like a good laugh at fate, money and matchmaking.

A ruined gentleman discovers his one talent
Destyn's fortune has vanished with the collapse of Steel. He has never earned a penny, and he has no idea how other people do it. When his goods are sold, every creditor is paid, and he is left with almost nothing.
What remains is a skill at conjuring, joined to a strange power over animals. So he rents two rooms on Central Park West and practices for a tour of rich summer resorts.
One May afternoon he sits on a park bench. A black horse charges at him, and he is hurled down and dragged before he grips its bit. He calms the animal with a few whispered words, and the scratched, bewildered rider is eighteen. Losing everything pushes him to use the talent he always had.

How it ends (spoiler)
Flavilla, singing the Lorelei on a rock in her fish-tailed costume, lures Henry Kingsbury into the water, and he swims out and tells her he loves her. She admits she cares and cannot yet say love. They quarrel, make up and become engaged. At last they eat sandwiches together on a sandspit, sure of trouble ahead and happy about it, though neither of them ever used the machine.
