De strijdlustige grens in short

The Fighting Edge follows two young people who need each other more than they know. June Tolliver grows up in hiding with a father whose past gives a bully power over them. Bob Dillon runs away with her, fails her in the worst possible hour, and spends the rest of the book earning back his name.

What De strijdlustige grens is about

What does a girl do when the only way to protect her father is to marry a man she hates? June Tolliver, not yet sixteen, lives in a log cabin on Piceance Creek in western Colorado. One evening a big, dark stranger named Jake Houck knocks at her door, and her father goes pale at the sight of him.

The Fighting Edge is a western novel by William MacLeod Raine, who spent his career writing about the Colorado range. It follows June, a fierce, ragged girl who shoots as well as any man, and Bob Dillon, a freckled orphan who has never won a fight. You get cowboys, a stuttering justice of the peace, a blizzard and a picture of courage built one day at a time.

Voor wie is het?. If you love cowboy stories with real range work, quick humor, loyal friends and a steady romance, this book is for you. It suits readers who cheer for underdogs.

The story in 10 parts

A ragged girl guards a secret

June Tolliver stands in the doorway of her cabin at sunset, patched and ragged. She lives alone with her father Pete, and the nearest neighbor is a trapper miles away. She shoots deer and bear and has read books, yet she owns no decent dress. She feels a shameful secret hangs over her life, though she can only guess what it is.

Her memories are few and sad. She remembers a dark-eyed mother who wept and a pile of stones on a hillside. One night a gaunt, hunted-looking man woke her and said he was her father.

Then Jake Houck arrives, a tall cattleman with cold, close-set eyes. He says he knew June as a baby. He watches her cook with a stare that makes her cheeks burn, and every joke he makes with Pete carries a threat. June is proud and sensitive because she feels set apart, yet she is honest, quick and tougher than she knows.

What a family hides from a child does not disappear, it only shapes her in the dark.
