Troost der wijsbegeerte in short

The Consolation of Philosophy is the story of a mind being healed. Boethius begins in grief, sure that the world is unjust and fortune is blind. Philosophy answers in stages.

What Troost der wijsbegeerte is about

Picture a man in prison under a sentence he does not deserve. He has lost his office, his library and his good name. Then a tall, ageless woman steps into the cell and tells him his real trouble lies elsewhere.

That scene opens The Consolation of Philosophy, written by Boethius around the year 524, shortly before his death. A Roman senator under the Gothic king Theodoric, he was accused of treason, a charge he denied. The woman is Philosophy herself, and she leads him out of despair with questions and stories. The listener gets a guided path through fortune, happiness, justice and freedom.

Voor wie is het?. Readers drawn to big questions about luck, happiness, justice and free will will enjoy this book. So will anyone who seeks comfort in hardship from a kind voice grounded in reason.

The 8 key ideas

Grief deepens when we forget who we are

The book opens with Boethius alone, writing sad verses while the Muses of poetry stand around his bed. A woman of strange size enters. She drives the Muses away, calling them sirens who feed a sick man sweet poison.

She is Philosophy, and she sits on the edge of his couch. He is too stunned to speak, so she dries his eyes with a fold of her robe. She reminds him that Socrates drank poison for her teaching. His suffering is not new. Good people have always made enemies of the wicked.

Boethius makes his case. He stood against officials who robbed the poor, and he defended the senator Albinus. His accusers were men the king himself had punished. He ends with a cry to God. Why does the world allow the innocent to suffer?

Philosophy listens calmly. No one has exiled him, she says. He has wandered from his true homeland, and the road back is open. She asks whether the world runs by chance or by reason. By reason, he answers. She asks what a human being is, and he can say only that a human is a rational, mortal animal. That is her diagnosis. He has forgotten his own nature, so he thinks the wicked are happy and fortune has no guide.

Sorrow grows heavier when we lose sight of what we are and where we are headed.

Vragen over Troost der wijsbegeerte

What is The Consolation of Philosophy about?

It follows a prisoner stripped of rank and prosperity who is visited by Philosophy in the form of a woman. She leads him through questions about luck, happiness, evil, God's plan and free will until he regains peace of mind.

Who is the woman in The Consolation of Philosophy?

She is Philosophy personified, the nurse of the prisoner's youth. Her robe carries the Greek letters for practice and theory joined by steps, and it is torn by schools that took only scraps of her teaching.

Who wrote The Consolation of Philosophy and when?

Boethius, a Roman senator and official, wrote it in prison around the year 524, after being accused of treason. It is a real work from a real writer's last months, shaped as a dialogue with prose and poems.

What is Fortune's wheel in the book?

Fortune's wheel is the image of luck turning, raising some people up and dropping others down. Philosophy says it is her nature to turn, so nobody should rest happiness on it. Only what is within us stays ours.

Is The Consolation of Philosophy easy to follow?

Yes, in its structure. It moves through five short books in clear steps, with questions and answers between two speakers. Poems lighten the argument, and each section builds on the one before it, so you can follow it easily.
